58 people have been confirmed dead and over 500 injured in America’s deadliest mass shooting in modern US history. The 64 year old gunman unleashed fire into a crowd of 22,000 people attending a Country Music Festival in Las Vegas from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. Among the victims included 54 year old Jack Beaton who died while saving his wife, Laurie, and Navy veteran Chris Roybal (28). However, this was not a terrorist attack. This was not an act of the Islamic State or Al Qaeda or Boko Haram. Millionaire and American citizen, Stephen Paddock, it is believed, acted alone.
We should not have to exist in a world where we fear for the lives of our loved ones whenever they go out the front door. Music festivals and sporting events are a symbol of cosmopolitanism and common morality and should remain as such. They are not an opportunity for despicable individuals to wreck havoc and inhumanity upon innocent people.
We shall not let the actions of the few outweigh the good in society. We shall not be deterred from seeing our favourite team or artists perform. We shall remember the good and brave in attacks such as this who sacrificed their life to save others.
We stand by you Las Vegas.
